In today's fast-paced world, navigating the complexities of teenage life is challenging for most and deadly for some. The "Eclectiq Teen" project is focused on fostering teen mental health and wellness. We seek to embrace the power of peer counseling in addition to professional guidance and support communities as a means of self-empowerment. Although grounded in science, the message that we bring to teens in crisis is also magical given the therapeutic nature of creativity and self-expression in music. Music is not so much a noun as it is a verb. It is something that we do and something that changes us for the better as we music.
At the heart of this project is an understanding that music and the arts have a profound and positive impact on mental health. Research in neuroscience has unveiled powerful truths about harmonies, melodies and rhythm. In music two senses overlap: hearing and touch. This is one reason why in Spanish the verb used for playing an instrument is "tocar" which literally means "to touch." Bioacoustic engineering further enriches our understanding, exploring how sound frequencies can influence emotional states and promote healing at the neuron level in the brain.
The "Eclectiq Teen" is centered around the idea that teens are not just lumps of human clay being molded by society into young adults. We are first class citizens already and powerful catalysts for change. Peer counseling offers a safe space for open dialogue and empathy, guided by simple yet effective principles of active listening, unpacking mental baggage and steering clear of crises whether imposed by outside forces or arising deep from within ourselves.
By integrating neuroscience research into an intentional elevation of a diverse, divergent and dynamic way of being we can find a path forward to accept each other and ultimately accept ourselves. We deserve to become resilient against bullying, depression and other forms of mental and physical abuse. There is a harmony within us if we tune our attention to the right frequencies of resonant strength and wellness.
